Run to beat cancer, or walk
Wed Sep 26, 2007, 03:24 PM EDT
People of all ages can support Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and cancer research as donors and participants in the Sensata 5K Road Race and One-Mile Fun Walk/Run event on Sunday, October 14.
The theme of the event is “Walk, Run, Beat Cancer.” Non-racers and walkers can participate by contributing on the race-day through a raffle drawing for prizes or by making a donation.
Businesses are also invited to contribute, through race sponsorships, in the fight against cancer.
Dana-Farber, a Harvard University affiliate in Boston, is a renowned treatment-and-research facility and home of the Jimmy Fund Clinic for pediatric cancer patients.
The one-mile race is scheduled to begin on Oct. 14 at 9 a.m. and the 5K race is set to start at 9:45 a.m. Racers and walkers will meet at the YMCA Texins Activity Center at the Attleboro Corporate Campus on Pleasant Street.
Sensata will host an awards ceremony immediately following the second race.
There will also be 25-, 50- and 100-yard dashes for children beginning at 11 a.m. behind the YMCA center. All children in these dashes will receive ribbons.
The first 200 registrants in the 5K race will receive race tee shirts.
Refreshments will be provided to all registrants. The fee for registering for the 5K run/walk is $15 before Oct. 12 and is $20 at the event. The fee for the one-mile race is $10.
Mailed entries must be received by October 9. Sensata will donate net proceeds to Dana-Farber.
Last year, in its first time sponsoring the road race as a spin-off company from Texas Instruments, Sensata raised $10,000 for Dana-Farber.
It is anticipated through the support of local businesses and race participants this year’s event will reflect an increase in total donations.
Awards for top men, women, youths
The top three 5K finishers in each of these age divisions will receive awards:
• male and female runners 18 and younger;
• 19 through 39;
• 40 through 49;
• 50 through 59;
• 60 and older;
Sensata will also award trophies for the 5k event to the: best overall male and female runners; first male and female wheelchair finishers; and first male and female Sensata finishers. For the one-mile event, Sensata will present trophies to the top three male and female adults (18 and older) and the top three males and females in divisions for ages: 8 and younger, 9 and 10, 11 and 12, 13 and 14, and 15 through 17.
Businesses invited to donate sponsorships
To raise additional contributions for Dana-Farber, Sensata has invited area businesses to donate sponsorships for the event. The four levels of sponsorship are: Platinum ($2,000 or more); Gold ($1,000 through $1,999); Silver ($500 through $999); and Bronze ($50 through $499). Depending on its level of sponsorship, a business’s logo will be included in the race program and on race tee shirts.
Individuals that want to contribute should make checks payable to “Sensata 5K Road Race” and mail them to Doug Strott, race committee chair, in care of Sensata Technologies, 529 Pleasant Street, Mail Station B-19, Attleboro, MA 02703.
