To the Editor:

Recently, the Massachusetts Highway Department ordered that all overhead patriotic displays across our highway bridges be removed. It is my belief that the presence of such displays not only demonstrates our collective gratitude to our brave service men and women, but also serves to remind us that our country is still at war.

Ben Franklin called the wild turkey “a bird of courage” and a true native of America. He had tremendous respect for turkeys’ resourcefulness, agility, and beauty, and he thought that the turkey should be the national bird of the United States.

Your program for Veterans Day in North Attleborough was an embarrassment to all Veterans in this town. Not once did you acknowledge the VFW, DAV or the American Legion.

Letter to the Editor: Americans in submission

Thu Oct 18, 2007, 12:49 PM EDT

To the Editor:

I happened across Mr. (Todd) Carges’s column entitled The Naked Communist (Oct. 3, 2007 Free Press), and I have to admit that I was quite taken aback by the level of shameless blatant right wing propaganda that is printed weekly in your publication.
While I agree that the school district in Illinois may have taken extreme measures in the name of political correctness, this incident in no way reflects the incorporation of an undercurrent of communist idealism into American sensibilities.
