In the first year of the Hockomock Swimming League, the North Attleborough High School girls' and boys' swim team left the Hockomock Tournament, held at the Attleboro High School pool on Saturday, Feb. 9, as first and second place winners.
After a nearly perfect season marred by a single loss to Sharon, the North Attleborough boys' swim team swept up second place, falling short 30 points behind Sharon.
"During the season, Sharon was our one loss," said Head Coach Tim Kelley, "and, frankly, they beat us badly then; but we hoped to catch them up in the final meet."
Short of catching up to Sharon after take-off, the North boys headlined with some fantastic feats from a young team led by senior Captain Ryan Brousseau. Freshman Connor Devers stole the day, finishing first in two individual meets, the 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle.
"In both races he was up against the top kids in the league," said Kelley. "It was neck-and-neck."
Devers joined sophomore Tom Nordberg, freshman Peter Chang, and junior Josh Keane to sweep up two second-place finishes in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
Sophomore Jacob Reidel in the 200 IM, closed in on second place in the final stretch from a fifth place stance. Reidel, in the most impressive performance of the day, beat his best time by seven seconds, and collected an unexpected second-place finish for North Attleborough.
According to Kelley, sophomore Dan McCracken "scored a bunch of points" for the team when he swiped two fourth places in the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle meets. Sophomore Tom Nordberg cleaned-up as well, winning first place in the 100 backstroke.
Despite the second place finish for the team, Kelley remains impressed with his team's efforts to overcome the Sharon lead: "They were kind of the underdogs. We asked a lot of them, and they really met our demands. They left it all in the pool, and came very close to beating that team."
While the boys were balked by overwhelmingly strong performances by Sharon, Kelley's girls' swim team soared to a first place finish in the tournament, sweeping through the events, with the Hockomock League teams chasing behind. Led by senior Captains Chelsea Berkeley and Maddie Hebert, the girls seized the championship with a 150-point lead over their closest opponent.
Top-placements in relay events set the team ahead. Sophomores Sam Jankowski and Jess Berkeley, and seniors Ashley Childers and Meghan Hamlin took first place in the 200 relay.
"That's a ton of points for us, right out of the gates, we were really ahead," said Kelley. Hebert took third place in both the 200 and 100 freestyles, while Hamlin took second in the 50 and 200 freestyles. Jankowski nabbed first place in the 50 freestyle and second place in the backstroke.
Berkeley rounded out the North girls' excellent performances with a second place finish in the 100 butterfly and a fourth place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
"The overwhelming number of good girl swimmers was evident at this event. We placed a number of girls in each event."
The North girls now own the bragging rights at the top of the Hockomock's new swimming league, but Kelley insists that the most exciting advantage to the win has years before it will be effective: "It's a very prestigious thing. Fifty years from now, people will ask who the first team to win the Hockomock League swim championship was, and our girls will be able to say it was them."
The North Attleborough swim team will compete next in the South Sectionals at MIT this upcoming Saturday, Feb.16.
